Nobody living can ever stop me
As I go walking my freedom highway.
Nobody living can make me turn back.
This land was made for you and me.

When you work on a car account you do a lot of driving, and thinking about driving, and talking about driving. Which inevitably leads to debates about the best beef jerkies of the country.

Which then leads to spending an entire night using x-acto knives and studio resources to trim 10 packages of World Kitchens beef jerky (my personal favorite commercially available brand) into a scale map of America.

Texas is actually 3 pieces of jerky glued together. They don't make jerky big enough for Texas.

During the final weeks of wk12, the directors push the students to perfect their portfolios and show them throughout the W+K network. I found this process to be frustrating, making and remaking my book with each new round of feedback. One night in a fit of rage, I wrote out this angry portfolio-manifesto-diatribe, which later became more popular than my actual portfolio.

Some people apply to school with a portfolio. Some people apply to ad school with a flip book of the cookie Titanic sinking into a frosting sea under a Hershey's chocolate night sky, accompanied by a CD soundtrack for the stop motion.

To make this animation, I first had to google "stop motion animation."

And this is how I got into WK12.

Rebrand

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Front.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="450" width_o="650" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Front_o.jpg" align="left" />
The Northwest Film Center's School of Film is the only hands-on film school in Portland. Students attending the School of Film are guaranteed to make a film during their time in the program, whereas other schools in the city don't even offer production courses.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Building.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="450" width_o="650" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Building_o.jpg" align="left" />
Our rebrand of the school focused on the element of procrastination that every creative person fights. Here was a school whose sole purpose for existing was to enable people to make film. The only barrier remaining is the film maker. Thus, the tagline became the simple call to "Make Film."

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Logo.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="450" width_o="650" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Logo_o.jpg" align="left" />
The rebrand also sought to make the School of Film more fun and accessible to hopeful young film makers in Portland. The logo design, a modernized take on the Play and Record buttons, express the simplicity of pushing a button and beginning the creative process.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/PreviewScreens.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="450" width_o="650" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/PreviewScreens_o.jpg" align="left" />
Preview screens run during movies in local theaters almost coerce the viewer to get off their seats and make a film.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Guide.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="450" width_o="650" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Guide_o.jpg" align="left" />
In an environment where everything exists as a way to make film, even the quarterly Schedule of Classes should be a tool. Here, the Schedule is also a storyboard.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/AdditionalPrint.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="450" width_o="650" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/AdditionalPrint_o.jpg" align="left" />
Print ads also became tools. Ads appeared in local newspapers including the Willamette Week.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Print.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="450" width_o="650" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Print_o.jpg" align="left" />
Copy: This is a green screen. Seriously. Try it. Even a little bit of chromakey green goes a long way when it comes to special effects. Learn how to use this and more tools of the trade at the nwFilmCenter School of Film.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Shirts.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="450" width_o="650" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670588/Shirts_o.jpg" align="left" />
To launch the campaign during the fall semester, students received tshirts & buttons when they enrolled.

This promo was played in local theaters as well as the nwFilmCenter's Whitsell Auditorium during the Portland International Film Festival.

Ballet Font was a typographic experiment combining ballet choreography and motion capture technology to create an typeface that would allow kids to learn the alphabet using their whole bodies.

Inspired by a story of a learning-disable girl who taught herself to read by spelling with her arms and legs, Ballet Font is a tribute to all those kids who were told to sit still and pay attention when, in fact, they just needed to move to think.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670584/LIGNE_Notes.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="464" width_o="650" height_o="464" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670584/LIGNE_Notes_o.jpg" align="left" />
Working with dancers from the Oregon Ballet Theatre, WK12 and FashionBuddha concepted a way to create the letters of the alphabet while using classic ballet moves.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670584/LIGNE_Capture.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="464" width_o="650" height_o="464" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670584/LIGNE_Capture_o.jpg" align="left" />
The letters were captured using infrared LEDs that were taped to the dancers' hands and feet.

Once the movements were recorded by camera, we took the raw captures and drew a stylized, kerned, usable typeface that could be downloaded for free from the website.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670584/LIGNE_postcards.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="451" width_o="650" height_o="451" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670584/LIGNE_postcards_o.jpg" align="left" />
The font was premiered during a First Thursday presentation and live dance performance at the Armory Theater in Portland.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670584/LIGNE_homepage copy.jpg" border="0" width="650" height="473" width_o="650" height_o="473" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670584/LIGNE_homepage copy_o.jpg" align="left" />
The entire project and behind the scenes video are available on the Ballet Font website, where you can also download a video of the ballerinas creating your name in dance.

The project was featured on various technology, typography, education and advertising blogs. Here is a blog post that explains some of the technology we used.

Wordstock is the Pacific Northwest's largest literary festival. Over 150 authors given workshops and discussions over the course of the festival.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670581/WSTK_guide.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="478" width_o="700" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670581/WSTK_guide_o.jpg" align="left" />
The 2009 Wordstock was comprised mostly of food writers, so our call to action became: Be a literary omnivore.

Under any other circumstances, the most awkwardly long tagline ever. But for a literary festival, it was perfect.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670581/WSTK_buttons.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="478" width_o="700" height_o="500" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670581/WSTK_buttons_o.jpg" align="left" />
Puns are never ever okay. Except food-book-puns on buttons that are given out by the thousands at Powell's Book Store. Then puns become sought after gems.

A book in a sandwich. Kind of gross. When it's a 5-layer meat and cheese monstrosity from Bunk Sandwiches in Portland, it's suddenly irresistible. Willamette Week print.

The biggest component of the campaign was our takeover of local grocery chain New Seasons Markets.

<img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670581/pbj.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="446" width_o="670" height_o="446" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/6/193140/2670581/pbj_o.jpg" align="left" />
Carefully placed shelf talkers throughout the store caught shoppers by surprise.

The puns continue.

During and leading up to the broadcast, a team of us wrote Blacksmith tweets and responses, sending deserving Twitter fans the Gold Anvil award.

The Blacksmith kind of talks like a weirdo. It's as if takes larping too seriously, and his character is a spokesman for Cheesy Skillets. The tweets were fun to write, and we tripled Velveeta's following during the broadcast.
